      Jenna Pollack Lecture

      Tuesday June 16 10:30 am - 11:30 am

I will discuss how my current research probes the interface between dance and engineering in performance. Our process considers collaborative language-building, iterative design, and unresolvable questions as we construct large wooden boxes to join dancers in a narrative through delight, impermanence, fragility, and urgency. In building these structures to ultimately serve as both objects and characters, we are looking at their material physics and their autonomous capacities as a distinct dramaturgy.

Possible images: female representation in Guida from her artist's notebook.

      Wednesday June 17 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

The present work investigates the images belonging to the artist's notebook of the animated short film Guida (2014), directed by the Brazilian animator Rosana Urbes, in order to delve into the potential poetic and representational features of the feminized bodies that emerge from there. Guida tells the story of a woman who ends her working life in an archive office after 30 years, and finds a new time for herself, giving rise to a discovery of new habits, care and pleasures. The short film raises a character's relationship with time to come and with the rediscovery of the body, continuously reflected in a new choreography of his days, where loose, light and free movements inhabit.

Politicize from the invention (of the movement): documentary effects in the animation of Córdoba (Argentina)

      Wednesday June 17 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

The animation is configured from a macro-operation that implies the illusion of movement in a frank way, appealing to different languages and putting significant matter in tension from an exercise that weakens the possible borders between the real and the fictional (their categories and genres). ) while combining technical-aesthetic exploration. The ubiquity of the phenomenon makes its exploration complex, however, in this work the interest lies in the interrogation about the modalities used to make visible (in general from the denunciation) socio-political situations of exclusion and vulnerability of rights.

Possible images: female representation in Guida from her artist's notebook

      Wednesday June 17 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Due to the visual and narrative richness of illustrated children's books, the possibility of film adaptations through animation is tempting. In each case, the director strives to offer an audiovisual approximation to the written work, appealing to the palette of cinematographic resources, the results of which should be reviewed. In the case of the short film El Pájarocubo, the adaptation of the illustrated book by the writer Marcos Mas was made through stopmotion animation. Adaptive work was addressed under key questions such as why make an adaptation? What elements are immovable? What does the audiovisual format contribute? The review of theoretical (McFarlane, 1996) and audiovisual references on the film adaptation allowed the first decisions to be made. These references allowed to base the adaptation of the Pájarocubo; which is a story about a bird that lives locked in a cage but dreams of its freedom. The text is narrated in verse and the images illustrate the most important moments of the story.
