Associate Professor of Architecture at Carnegie Mellon University, chairs the Computational Design program and directs the Computational Design Laboratory (CodeLab).
Author of numerous publications, exhibitions, and technologies critically examining the interplay of computing and design including the books Builders of the Vision: Software and the Imagination of Design (Routledge 2015) and Designing the Computational Image (with Theodora Vardouli, AR+D 2023). Cardoso has received grants from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, Canada’s Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, the Manufacturing Futures Institute, Google, and Autodesk among others; has held visiting fellowships at the University of Cambridge, U.K., and at Leuphana, Germany; and is currently a visiting scientist at the Leibniz University, Hannover, Germany as an Alexander Von Humboldt Foundation Experienced Research Fellow. He is also co-editor, with Terry Knight, of the “Design, Technology, and Society” Routledge book series, was the SIGGRAPH 2022 Art Papers Chair, a SIGGRAPH 2024 Keynote speaker, and papers co-chair for the 2024 SIGCHI Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work & Social Computing (CSCW).
