    Artist Union. still life

    Anna Frants - United States

‌“Artist Union. Still life” is a reflection on the law of large numbers. Is it applicable to the visual arts: to colors in painting, lines in graphics, shapes in sculpture, and image integrity in installations? The law of large numbers is a principle that describes carrying out the same experiment many times. According to this law, the joint action of a large number of random factors leads to a result that is almost independent of chance. For example, in the 16th century, by royal order, the length of the English foot was defined as the arithmetic mean of the foot length of the first 16 people to leave church on Sunday for Matins. Although the law of large numbers was not yet defined, it is the basis for the principle of arithmetic mean used to determine the length of a foot.

    The Doors: Disco Beast (2016)

    Jonathan Monaghan - United States

‌Disco Beast follows a psychedelic unicorn who wanders through empty commercial spaces, such as an abandoned mall and a luxury hotel lobby. The work refers both to medieval iconography, such as the well-known tapestries of a captive unicorn, and to its appearance in popular culture to build a new mythology about modern confinement by technology and materialism. The unicorn as a symbol of another world at odds with banal corporate spaces in the piece provokes subconscious anxieties around globalization and consumerism.

Slow burning. Still Life (open ended)

Vasilii Bakanov and Andrew Strokov - Russia

‌Inside a black box are three fruits on pedestals. Under artificially created and regularly maintained conditions, fruits undergo three chemical reactions: caramelization, Maillard reaction, and enzymatic browning. Normally, these processes take place in a matter of minutes in the kitchen. Here they are intentionally prolonged in time. Inside the box, constant humidity and a temperature of 60 degrees Celsius are maintained, thereby eliminating the bacteria that cause putrefaction. Under ideal and constantly controlled conditions, the fruits retain their shape and are consumed from one day to the next at the slowest possible speed.

    Murmuration

    Sergey Komarov - Russia

‌One of the hypotheses of what gossip is is the preparation of birds for migration, the training of young animals, and the purification of interaction within the flock. Another meaning of the word "gossip" is the noise formed by the chatter of the crowd. An interesting fact is that, while they murmur, the birds emit hums, as if they were in a trance or chatting.
