““In my beginning is my end” TS Eliot
Yo recuerdo is a single-channel video installation, the result of working for seven months with five Colombian political refugees who live in the city of Sherbrooke, in the south east of Quebec. Through different image and sound textures, this work offers the viewer different readings and interpretations of life in exile. Inspired by German philosopher Axel Honneth's theory of recognition, and aided by video cameras, each project participant explored "three spheres of interaction" in their daily lives — love, rights, and solidarity — while reflecting on their past in Colombia. These videos are integrated into audiovisual portraits of Sherbrooke and different cities in Colombia, through images and echoes that mix past and present. No prepared interviews are presented, only voiceovers of the five characters that together with various soundscapes make up the voice of the film.
A video montage algorithm developed for the project mixes images and sounds in real time, presenting a new version of the work at each screening. This eternal montage technique builds a film without a specific duration, without beginning or end, thus speaking of exile as a closed circle, a permanent déjà vu where memories, present and future of the protagonists are mixed. This piece presents five visions of exile, five lives with different pasts and different reasons for living in Canada, which together create a complex portrait of Colombian political refugees in Quebec. “
