In this paper, we propose characterizing Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) as a negotiation between a specific design and its context of use. We then argue that HCI design is a political activity, and that the classification between users and programmers it commonly uses reflects a political stance, deeply rooted in its socio-political context. Finally, we propose that HCI can take inspiration from new media art's subversive appropriation of technological knowledge.
