Born in Bogotá, Colombia, Julio Velasco obtained a Master's in Art and Numerical Media at the Sorbonne (Paris 1) and collaborated for several years with the Department of Arts and Sciences of the same university. Currently, at the University of Paris 8 – Saint-Denis, he is doing a PhD in Art and Sociology. He lives and works between Paris and Berlin. The artistic research that Julio Velasco develops is carried out in parallel in the theoretical and practical fields. The work that he is currently doing at the University of Paris 8 is based on the comparison between the neighborhoods of contemporary art, Paris, Berlin and London. The interest that the artist bears in this subject is directly linked to his explorations of the relationships between collectivity and individuality in the creation of the work of art. He is the author of several essays published in scientific journals and books.
In his plastic research, science occupies a privileged place and new materials as well as new technologies constitute his main medium. But, its theme remains social, thus insisting on the fact that science and technology must be at the service of society. Velasco's work includes videos, performances and installations that use cameras, projectors, QR codes, photosensitive and thermosensitive materials, microprocessors, computers, but also include the use of elements such as water, plants, light or sound.
