Composer João Pedro Oliveira holds the Corwin Chair of Composition at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He studied organ performance, composition and architecture in Lisbon.

He received his doctorate in music from New York University at Stony Brook. His music includes opera, orchestral compositions, chamber music, electroacoustic music and experimental video.

He has received more than 70 international awards and recognitions for his works, including three prizes at the Bourges Electroacoustic Music Competition, the prestigious Magisterium Prize and the Giga-Hertz Special Prize, first prize in the Metamorphoses competition, first prize in the Yamaha-Sound Visions competition and first prize in the Musica Nova competition.

He has taught at the University of Aveiro (Portugal) and the Federal University of Minas Gerais (Brazil). His publications include several journal articles and a book on 20th century music theory.
