Lineage
Ana María Ferro
Colombia
My grandmother Pastora Tovar carries the secret of a dead daughter, her memory buried in years of oblivion. Facing those silences is an encounter with pain. To flee, to hide, to say nothing in the midst of a war, makes her a survivor. In her silence echoes the voice of her dead daughter, my aunt. I listen to her and she speaks through me. Yacopí, her hometown, was bombed in 1952 by the conservative government during the time of "La Violencia". The ruins of the town remain as the wrinkles of my grandmother's body and both resist the oblivion of history. Through the silence and the ruins, my aunt's voice emerges and our Lineage becomes the memory that recovers the lost heritage of my grandmother and the history of Yacopí in the midst of Colombian violence.
