Chiara Passa
Italy
Chiara Passa, visual artist (born in Rome in 1973), has been working in the media field since 1997. I graduated (M.F.A.) at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, with a master's degree in audiovisual media at the Faculty of Modern Literature. After living in many different places, I currently live and work around & in Rome. My artistic research analyzes the differences in virtual spaces through a variety of technical technologies and devices - often using virtual reality and augmented reality technologies as an artistic means to explore architecture as an interface. I use virtual reality and augmented reality to understand their intrinsic language and thus to shake and challenge the static notion of architecture, exploring the liminal duality between tangible and virtual place, achieving in art a strange oscillation between spaces. However, I work with animations, networked artworks, interactive and site-specific video installations, and RA/RV video sculptures, sometimes made with Carrara marble, fresco technique, plexiglass or 3D printed pieces.
However, I use the VR medium to create site-specific video installations using a wide range of google cardboards. Typically, 3D viewers are installed throughout the actual space, designing geometric shapes in liminal zones where viewers can peek through the 3D viewers over the wall, and thus immerse themselves in a reconstructed/resized VR space made of wired geometric angles and futuristic views, sometimes half-open or half-closed at 180°, 220° or 360°, thus highlighting the paradox of the modern spatio-temporal condition, which today is even more diluted between physical and liquid space.
My work has been exhibited internationally from festivals, conferences and institutions, including: 2019 «Object Oriented Space». Solo exhibition at the MLAC Museum in Rome. “Virtual Natives – Sculpture”, Roehrs & Boetsch Gallery, Zurich (2019); «Oslo Night show», HEK Museum Basel (2018); «InSonic» immersive art show, ZKM | Center for Art and Media Museum, Karlsrhue (2017); “From live architecture: Dimensioning”, solo show at Furtherfield Gallery, London (2016); "Off Biennale Cairo" (2015-2016); «ISEA Disruption», Lecture and exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery.
