      “Laughing Stock:” Stock Photography and Satire, from Digital Meme Culture to Post-Internet Art

      This study interrogates the contrast between the relatively unexplored territory of stock photography as an academic focus, and its widespread exploitation in visual culture. Ubiquitous online in its various commercial and editorial formats as well as on social media, stock photography is worthy of attention because of the many characters it takes on. Taking satire as a starting point, this study examines the limits of stock photography, or the “wallpaper of consumer culture,” captured by the renderings of stock images in meme culture, while surveying alternate possibilities of their handling in art and contemporary photography practices.

      Maria Cristina Capriles

      PhD in audiovisual and telematics at the University of Paris. Graduated with Laude in Education, planning mention, UCV, 1976. She has a Master's degree in Educational Technology at the UCV and a doctorate in audiovisual and telematics at the University of Paris. It has convened three international reflection symposiums on audiovisual discourse, the audiovisual future, and the recent multimedia-interactivity`96. The result of this are the books that comprise the conferences. In the teaching area, she was a professor for five years of the subject: History of Culture, at the Bramante Academy, now defunct; She was also a trainer for the chair of social development I and II at the UCV School of Education and a professor of the chair of introduction to Pedagogy at the same. It started the Film and Television School and the first specialization in Audiovisual in Audiovisual and creates the CENMAT, Center for New Media, Art and Technology, whose initial work is the current cycle of conferences on Digital Art and New Media.

      Carlos Trilnick

      Visual artist, his work is also developed in the field of video installation, multimedia art and photography. It has been characterized, since its inception, by an expressive search and an experimental spirit. It is through the artistic practice assisted by these interweaving of media that Trilnick proposes a series of remarks on different topics of social and political reality, generating works of commitment with their environment. He has exhibited in numerous individual and collective shows as well as in biennials and video, film and electronic arts festivals in America and Europe. He has twice obtained the Scholarship for Artistic Creation from the National Endowment for the Arts of Argentina and the Scholarship from the Metropolitan Fund for Culture of the City of Buenos Aires.
