XXI INTERNATIONAL IMAGE FESTIVAL

CALL 2022

The International Image Festival is a space for designers, artists and scientists to meet around themes that interrelate digital culture with contemporary debates on the great challenges of the 21st century. In its 20 editions, the Festival has managed to establish an international network of institutions, researchers and creators who exchange experiences and knowledge every year, which has positioned it as an event of international relevance and academic reference in design, art, science and technology.

The Festival addresses cutting-edge topics that integrate various disciplines, distributed knowledge and social and environmental problems that invite critical reflection on media and communications in contemporary times. In previous years, the Festival has been held in alliance with the following events:

Festival de Arte Contemporânea Sesc_Videobrasil. 2015  http://site.videobrasil.org.br/

Balance Unbalance, 2016 http://www.balance-unbalance2016.org/

ISEA International (formerly Inter-Society for the Electronic Arts) http://www.isea2017.disenovisual.com/

PDC2020 - 16th Participatory Design Conference 2020.  https://www.pdc2020.org/

In 2021, the Festival established joint actions with:

Chroniques - Biennale des Imaginaires Numériques Francia. https://chroniques.org/

Unbound Listening - Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival - British Council 2021. https://hcmf.co.uk/

In 2022, the XXI International Image Festival, which will be held in hybrid mode (face-to-face-virtual) from October 17th to 21st, is linked to the International Conferences on Design History and Studies ICDHS (http://www.ub.edu/icdhs/), an event that has held 12 versions in different cities around the world (Zagreb, Taipei, Osaka, Brussels, Helsinki, Istanbul, Aveiro, Barcelona, Sao Paulo, among others), and that aims to promote the discipline of the history and theory of Design in different countries

The International Image Festival has been organized for 25 years by the Visual Design Department of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the Universidad de Caldas (University of Caldas) and, since 2021, it has been held in alliance with the Faculty of Arts and Design of the Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano - Bogotá in Colombia.

Central Theme

SURtropias

Creation, from avant-garde perspectives, is linked to open spaces and times that dialogue with multiple centers and engages with forms of life and knowledge that have not had prominence in traditional academic knowledge. It is under this view of openness and exchange that the concept of SURtropias is suggested as a way of defining those creative processes that take into account decentralizations and mobilities that can respond, in an alternative way, to the profound geopolitical, environmental and social challenges we face today in our territories.

The increase of complexity in the dynamics of the 21st century questions the uniqueness of visions that are imposed in the face of the ignorance of the singularities of integrated environmental and digital ecologies that, due to geographical, technological, biological, cultural, linguistic or gender diversities, require collaborative analysis and adaptive actions from every latitude. Therefore, it is necessary to observe not the universality, but the pluriversality of knowledge, to carry out inquiries from different coordinates and integrating visions that come from multiple fields and places, in such a way that this allows confronting the labyrinths of knowledge, by introducing critical views that reconstruct a reality apart from unidirectional discourses.

SURtropias, which integrates the words "sur" (from the Proto-Germanic sun-thaz: "next to the sun"), and "tropía" (from the Greek suffix meaning "quality of going around" or "being around"), guides us to explore alternative forms of critical and propositional analysis of diverse realities. Along these lines, themes are proposed to establish a dialogue and open up to renewed ideas in the following areas:

Poetics of representation.

Transmedia interactivity, fosters new forms of analog and digital representation that, in turn, proposes metadesigns, with diverse emerging languages. Metadesign, as an interaction of systems, is the possibility of relating diverse forms of representation towards a common goal of transformation within integrated social and natural dynamic systems.

Conectographies

The systems of networks and connectivity propose forms of exponential growth, which are related to data and geographies, which have the capacity to weave networks in a cyclical manner in permanent movement, migrations and transhumances, which blur conventional borders.

Geocultural technologies

The Cyberculture and free, intercultural, intergenerational and interdisciplinary culture are integrated into inhabited spaces through autonomous, self-generating and adaptive creations that go beyond planning and processes.

Persistences

The claims and progressive activism of political, environmental and social resistance favor changes in thinking towards the preservation of life and planetary health, issues that from art and design imply commitments for a common commitment.

Hybridizations

Consilience, as a willingness to integrate knowledge and information from different disciplines, proposes a framework of understanding that merges processes and methodologies such as bio-creation, which integrates science and art, or xeno-feminism as a joint struggle from diverse identities. The consilience between Design, Art and Science proposes relationships, symbiosis and connections of diversity of knowledge in areas related to ethics, aesthetics and technology.

In synthesis, the International Image Festival invites artists, designers and scientists to propose ideas, works and projects around SURtropias in order to promote scenarios of understanding the interdependence of our being and feeling in the world, as individuals and as a collective, in intense interrelation with everything created, to avoid the traditional duality subject-object, mind-body, reason-emotion, which has conditioned the division between disciplines and has caused an environmental imbalance of instability and uncertainty, affecting terrestrial habitability and more significantly the contemporary globalized world.
