A visual and sound expedition of the city in 'Meta-landscape Medellín'

In November 2017, we launched the call for a joint artistic residency with the Exploratorio del Parque Explora de Medellín. Fueled by the theme of the 17th International Image Festival: New Expeditions, the call had as its winning project "Meta-landscape Medellín", a research-creation proposal by the plastic artist Alejandro Escobar.

«Meta-landscape Medellín» proposes an exercise of co-creation by the author with the multi-instrumentalist musician Federico Goez, from which a hybrid piece of digital cartography will emerge through virtual reality technology.

«It is an artistic installation with an analogue component and a digital one. The analogous component is a paper sculpture whose structure resembles interconnected tunnels. Its surface shows a multiplicity of city photographs arranged in such a way that the contrasts and gaps that separate multiple realities are evident; stray dogs, passers-by, streets, businesses, homeless people, high-end vehicles, slums, buildings, bars, prostitution, schools. All connected to each other from a process of digital retouching in which visual connections are built between one another (Meta-image).

This sculpture is a small scale copy of a large scale digital model. Through the use of headphones and a 360 video viewer, the viewer enters these digital tunnels and is carried away on a visual and sound expedition through the large-scale Meta-image.

In this way, the installation challenges the perception of the spectator and invites him to build a mental image of the city that is nourished by the rereading of what is seen in the physical plane and in the virtual plane.»

This project is being developed at the Exploratorio Audiovisual Laboratory until April 26, with open invitation on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to the public of Medellín who wants to know the creation process. As part of the Design and Media Arts Exhibition, the installation resulting from the residency will be exhibited within the framework of the 17th International Image Festival, which will take place from May 7 to 11.

We invite you to follow the process on the Exploratorio's social networks @exploratoriomed and the artist @alejandro.escobar.artist

About the artists

Alejandro Escobar

I am a plastic artist who started out as a painter. My interest in the image as a vehicle for the representation of the visual experience led me to explore photography, sculpture, 3D modeling and virtual reality. Thanks to my master's degree in Digital Fine Arts (London 2015 – 2017), I managed to refine my visual proposal by creating Installations that combine painting and sculpture with photography and virtual reality, they are hybrid Meta-Images that challenge the formal attributes of the image; flatness, frame, stillness and monocular vision and challenge the viewer by proposing an exploration exercise in which the image evolves over time while it is explored both as an object and as a representation space.

Frederick Goez

Multi-instrumentalist musician, performer and composer, pioneer of the Colombian electronic music scene, passionate about analog recording formats such as cassette recorders and open reel tape recorders. He has made 15 recordings in which he explores various sounds between acoustic, electronic and experimental, with some film instrumental passages. He has also participated in projects such as Bomba Estéreo, Estados Alterados, Federico Franco, Panorama and Parlantes.
